Responsible and sustainable forest management has become a vital issue in recent decades. Inadequate and improper forest management practices threaten the long-term viability of many forests. The Sustainable Biomass Program (SBP) was established by large European utilities that use biomass in power plants to certify sustainable woody biomass for energy use. Certification begins with the biomass producer, making forest certification not the only way to confirm compliance with sustainability requirements. Control Union Certifications offers SMETA (Sedex Member Ethical Trade Audit), a method developed by the multi-stakeholder consulting initiative Sedex. SMETA's role is to harmonize social audit standards and monitoring methods to ease the audit burden on suppliers by sharing reports and encouraging improvements in supply chain labor standards.
GRS is an international, voluntary, comprehensive product standard that establishes requirements for third-party certification of recycled content, supply chain, social and environmental practices, and chemical restrictions. REDcert EU was initially developed as one of the first voluntary schemes based on the European Renewable Energy Directive (RED). REDcert's primary focus is on European supply chains. This means that REDcert EU is primarily limited to application within European Member States.
